In an announcement on 19 January, the NGO Lëtzebuerg gëtt Gas stated:

“After 15 years of work promoting CNG in the grand duchy… and the significant investment by several actors in the installation and maintenance of the CNG pumps during this time, success has unfortunately not been reached. In addition, the national plan for alternative fuels now prioritises electric mobility.”

Erny Huberty, the NGO’s chair, told L’essential that natural gas promoters had a “chicken and the egg” problem: not enough CNG vehicles to justify more CNG pumps and vice-versa.

CNG represented less than 0.5% of vehicle registrations between 2008 and 2017, according to the European Alternative Fuels Observatory.

On its website, Lëtzebuerg gëtt Gas said natural gas pumps at the Aral stations in Bascharage, Schifflange, Remerschen and Lintgen will shut down by 2019.

The pumps at two filling stations, in Findel and Merl, will be renovated by the end of 2018 and “remain operational for several more years”.

The announcement has no bearing on liquefied petroleum gas pumps in Luxembourg.
