The number of identified close contacts from 29 March to 4 April meanwhile dropped 16.1% to 3,464, health ministry figures show.

The fall was observed despite a jump in the number of PCR tests performed, from 67,052 to 79,883. In total, 1.93% of tests carried out came back positive, compared to 2.51% the week before.

The weekly death toll remained stable at 19, while hospital admissions rose slightly to 111 compared to 107 the week before. In intensive care units, the number of confirmed covid patients rose to 29, from 21.

The effective reproduction rate dropped below 1.0 to reach 0.88 and the seven-day incidence rate was 247 case per 100,000 residents, compared to 269 the week before. The highest incidence rate was recorded among 15 to 29-year-olds with 317 cases per 100,000 residents.

During the week, just shy of 20,000 vaccine doses were administered, of which 4,093 were a second dose. By 6 April, 108,940 vaccine doses had been administered.

According to government figures, Luxembourg has enough vaccines to inoculate 128,447 people until the end of April 2021. Allocations may be adjusted on a weekly basis depending on production capacities, however.

Luxembourg sequenced 32.4% of positive test results, well above the ECDC 10% recommendation. The UK variant made up three quarters of cases, while the South African variant accounted for 18%.
