Eight new petitions went live on parliament’s online petitions page on Friday, most of them responding to various aspects of confinement. Petition 1534 calls for greater government aid for small businesses and cafés, crippled by lockdown measures. Petition 1546, meanwhile, calls for business incentives to encourage companies to enable staff to continue working from home after confinement measures are relaxed, to ease pollution and traffic and improve workers’ quality of life.

Education features prominently with petition 1539 calling for the end of exams at the end of secondary school. Petition 1518 wants an end to homework at primary school level and petition 1517 is calling for more Luxembourgish classes to be offered in the south of the country. On the subject of languages, petition 1498 calls for all petitions to be submitted in the country’s there national languages: Luxembourgish, German and French.

Of the current open petitions, the only one close to reaching the 4,500 threshold needed to prompt a discussion in parliament is petition 1535, which wants a bonus for all staff working in hospitals, clinics, health centres and care homes for their “exceptional engagement” during the crisis period. At the time of publishing, it had 3,462 public signatures. It remains open until 26 May.

How to sign a petition

These and other new petitions can be viewed by clicking here.

Anyone may sign a petition, provided they are aged 15 or over and have a social security card in Luxembourg.

If the petitions garner 4,500 signatures or more before they are closed for signing, Luxembourg MPs will debate the subject in parliament.
