On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July, the service club 51 organised a big international football tournament with the help of Special Olympics LuxembourgPicture credit: Ronny Oestreicher/Fifty One

Since 2016, the club actively supports the rights of children and financially supports organisations and associations which help children in need. In that context, organising a sports event for children with intellectual difficulties fit the bill perfectly.

Over three days, 51 International held the sports event and international football tournament for children with special needs in Ettelbruck. On Friday, kids from Luxembourg with special needs attended various sports events and students from the lycée Sainte Anne in Ettelbruck entertained them.

Around 200 kids, from the US (Arizona), Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands came to play and have fun. 51 International paid for their travel costs, catering and accommodation, while Special Olympics organised the athletic events.

The club’s motto is friendship, esteem and tolerance. It’s the only service club that has its roots in Europe; the name derives from the rule that the average age of the members should not exceed 51 years. The goal is to have youngsters and older people meet, exchange views and learn from one another.
