Responding to a parliamentary question on Tuesday from CSV MP Diane Adehm, DP family minister Corinne Cahen explained that 28 homes were not being used because they are undergoing renovations. A further 14 were empty because Olai has yet to appoint a social housing body to manage them.

Meanwhile, the body is considering ending the lease on two other places and one other will be demolished to expand an existing building, currently in use.

Some 4,004 beds are provided across the 56 structures in use, with a 71.4% occupancy rate. Cahen explained not all beds were occupied because many of the asylum seekers and refugees are part of family units and the rooms contain a fixed number of beds.

“The number of occupants in a room cannot always be equivalent to the number of beds per room. This results in certain beds being statistically counted as not occupied, while they are not necessarily available for other asylum seekers.”
