“Muslims are and stay terrorists, everything they do now is hypocritical,” was one of the Facebook statements written by Kies, according to RTL.

Kies’s comments were directed at Muslim people and backed with religious examples from the bible. In an interview with RTL, on 12 September, Kies said that as a Christian she respected everyone. She officially pledged her apology and added that she didn’t belong to a religion and advocated religious freedom. She has meanwhile deleted the comments on Facebook.

Marceline Goergen, who represents the ADR on the Luxembourg City council and is a candidate for this year’s local elections, explained to Delano on 12 September that Kies committed a serious mistake, for which she’d apologised.

The political manifesto of ADR for the local elections included the accommodation of refugees with “heart and reason”. The majority of refugees who come to the grand duchy are Muslims. Goergen told Delano that this point in the manifesto was still applicable: “if someone fears for their life, no doors should be closed. I will not associate Mrs Kies’s comments with our political views on refugees.”

As to why ADR accepted people like Kies as members, Goergen said: “these events have only recently been called to the party’s and to my attention. Secondly, it is impossible to track down every member or candidate, or to interfere with their private lives and their Facebook accounts.”

Goergen explained that the consequences of Kies’s mistake are being discussed by the party leaders and will be shared with the press in time.
