Amnesty International Luxembourg has announced that Olivier Pirot was appointed its new director general on 1 September. The 52-year old Belgian, who was born in Luxembourg, has a dozen years’ experience in the humanitarian aid sector, most recently as the desk officer in charge of Caritas Luxembourg projects in North-West Syria.

Prior to that he was emergency coordinator or head of mission at Handicap International and Médecins Sans Frontières in different countries including Cambodia, Afghanistan, Haiti, Pakistan, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Pirot has bachelor’s degrees in law and economics, a master’s degree in management and a master’s degree in political science and international relations. As well as his experience with NGOs, he has worked for the private sector in twelve years in Luxembourg at FNP group and Luxair Group and also at research institute CRP Tudor.
