The annual inflation rate stood at 2.5% compared to 2.1% a month earlier in April. In the statistics released, the prices of petroleum products rose in May by 3.2% for a liter of diesel and 1.4%  for petrol. This deviates from the low figures observed in 2020 when oil prices where exceptionally low. The bill for households that filled their heating oil tanks in May increased by 4.1% compared to the previous month. 

The report notes a slight increase in food prices by 0.4% in May compared to the preceding month with customers paying slightly more for foodstuffs such as whole milk (2.2%) and fresh fruits (1.4%) compared to the previous month. On the other hand, a decrease in prices for fresh seafood (-3.8%), fresh vegetables (-1.2%) and rice (-1.0%) was reported. Prices however increased for alcoholic beverages such as beer (+1.5%), spirits and liqueurs (+0.8%) and wine (+0.3%). 

The inflation rate was pulled down by several goods and services notably newspapers (-9.6%), car insurance (-1.0%) and personal computers (-1.0%), while travel, specifically airfares increased by 13.8% compared to April.
