33% of Luxembourg workers regularly worked from home during the June-September 2020 period, compared to 21% in 2017, according to Chamber of Employees (Chambre des salariés) polls. The number who “never” worked from home was 48% during the June-September 2020 period, compared to 72% in 2017. Illustrative image: Daria Nepriakhina/Unsplash

However, this will only be an option for just over half the workforce, as according to the survey, only 52% worked from home last year at some stage. This figure dropped to 33% during the summer when confinement measures were eased. Two-thirds of those who were not able to work from home would like the option.

The survey found that being forced to work from home had negative consequences for many, with greater time pressure, more work-life balance conflicts and, on average, higher actual weekly working hours. All the same, there were no signs of increased burnout risk, declining job motivation, nor impaired wellbeing.

Employees working from home were more likely to work 46 hours a week or more, the Chamber of Employees said on 30 March. Working from home was judged to be just as productive as office work for 73% of those surveyed.
