UK nationals were given until 30 June to apply for residency in Luxembourg in the wake of Brexit. If they do not, they risk losing their right to live and work in the country as well as access to social benefits.

“With just two weeks remaining to apply for residency in Luxembourg, my message to UK nationals here is clear: if you have not done so already, you must apply for residency today,” Thomas said in a statement. “Submitting your application before 30 June is vital to protect your right to live here, and your future in Luxembourg.”

As of 4 June, more than 600 people were yet to submit their application for new residency documents, the foreign ministry said earlier this month.

Only applicants who can provide good reason for missing the deadline will be able to have their application accepted after 30 June.

“Please do not delay if you are missing certain documents – you can explain your situation within the application form. The important thing is to apply and support is available if you need it,” the ambassador said.

All UK nationals who arrived in Luxembourg before 1 January this year must apply to update their status. “If you know someone who hasn’t, please encourage them to start the process,” Thomas said.

The foreign ministry in June said that reminders had been sent to the people concerned and that it was closely monitoring the progress of applications being received.

All applications so far have been accepted, with 3,838 requests filed as at 4 June of which 565 were still being processed on that date.
