The press conference had been set to take place following Bettel’s meeting with British PM Boris Johnson, about Brexit, in Luxembourg City. Downing Street said nearby protests would drown out the press Q&A.

One of the protestors told Delano that demonstrators had agreed to let the press conference proceed without interruption.

James Whale said during his Talkradio programme on Monday evening that Bettel was an:

“... arrogant idiot. What an arrogant idiot. I mean, how dare the prime minister of a postage stamp sized country speak about the prime minister of Great Britain… I’m ashamed.”

The comment came during an interview with Conservative MP Steve Double. Double then stated:

“I think he’s done those of us that want to leave the European Union a huge favour today. Because he’s made it clear the attitude that many members of the European Union have towards us in the UK. And the fact that we have voted to leave, that somehow this is all our fault, all our problem. And there’s no self-awareness from the EU that they have contributed to this situation. I think it just reaffirms why many of us voted Leave in the first place.”

The Daily Mail wrote that Bettel had “stiched up” Johnson in an effort to ‘humiliate’ him. The newspaper quoted Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski saying Bettel was “disrespectful to a British PM for trying to fulfil the will of the British people” and “We fund the EU to the tune of billions every year, not sure what Luxembourg’s contribution has been.”

The Daily Telegraph said Johnson had walked “into a Brexit ambush”.

The Sun wrote that “Boris Johnson’s treatment in Luxembourg was staggeringly rude and utterly nauseating” in an editorial that referred to the “EU’s snakes”.

The Spectator said Johnson received a “frosty reception in Luxembourg” and also said that Bettel ‘humiliated’ the UK PM.
