The survey was carried out with 17% of small and medium-sized enterprises active in the sector, and found the majority of international business by trades was in the area of construction (73%) and mechanics (14%).

Despite the low international spread, leaders acknowledged the importance of international strategies and 51% of people surveyed said that expansion over the border was either a feasible or desirable.

The survey found a trend between the size of a company and its expansion--62% of companies employing 100 or more people were reportedly considering conquering foreign markets, compared to 36% of firms employing 1 to nine staff.

It wasn’t merely a lack of ambition that held companies back from expanding over the border. The survey found that 69% of respondents had enough business domestically while 39% cited their company size or lack of capacity as a barrier. Only 32% cited foreign administrative barriers as obstacles.
