An average family of four, with two adults and two children, needs to earn €4,079 per month in order to have a decent life in Luxembourg, a recent study by Statec, the national institute for statistic and economic studies, has revealed. The study, carried out by Armande Frising, describes a decent life as being able to, “to meet basic needs and participate actively in society.”
It goes on to say that this hypothetical couple would get by on €4,079 per month only if they rent outside the capital and make most of their trips by public transport. Housing, according to the study, accounts for 38% of the family budget and the couple in the example would need to pay an average of €1,542 per month to rent housing of about 100m2.
The study continues to break down the spending of the “average” family of four.
“Assuming that our reference family does not follow a special diet, does not suffer from allergies and that the majority of lunches are taken in the canteen or home, it would need €922 euros per month for food,” it states.
As the right to rest and leisure is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a budget for "participating in social life" has been allocated to the family of reference, amounting to €559 euros per month. This includes cultural and sports activities as well as 6 annual outings to a restaurant and a budget to invite friends to the home.
Travel was estimated at €422 per month, clothing €236, children’s needs €217, personal hygiene €123, health €46 and continuing education was allocated €12 per month.
