Backes, who previously served as diplomatic advisor to Jean-Claude Juncker while he was prime minister, was head of the European Commission’s representative office in Luxembourg since September 2016 before taking the role with the grand ducal court on 1 June. It marks the first time a woman has been appointed to the role.

She succeeded Lucien Weiler, who served for five-and-a-half years in the role. This photo, which features Grand Duke Henri and Backes on the right, was posted on the Court’s Twitter account on Tuesday with a caption explaining it was a meeting of the new team to discuss topics for the autumn.
