That’s according to a report by 24/7 Wall St issued last week that looked at the earnings of heads of government or state, aside from monarchs with political power.

Bettel, with an annual salary of $278,035, was ranked 10th best paid. “Luxembourg is the smallest nation among the top 10 countries that pay their leaders the most”, 24/7 Wall Street said on 16 April.

The prime ministers of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and several Nordic countries also figured on the top 20 list, as did the Austrian and German chancellors.

Donald Trump, the US president, came in 4th ($400,000). The three best paid were Ueli Maurer, president of Switzerland ($482,958), Carrie Lam, chief executive of Hong Kong ($568,400) and Lee Hsien Loong, prime minister of Singapore ($1,610,000).

To compile the rankings, 24/7 Wall St said:

“We gathered information from country websites, as well as data from organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the CIA World Factbook.”
