Xavier Bettel attended the opening session of the Wall Street Stock Exchange, where he rang the famous bell on Monday 18 September.

He then went to the opening of the 72nd general assembly of the United Nations in New York. The overarching theme of the assembly was to focus on peace and a sustainable planet. Bettel said: “the fight for peace calls for dialogue in a spirit of compromise.” He had a bilateral meeting with António Guterres, in which they talked about a global pact for migration, the importance of peace in Africa and the situation in the Middle East.

The prime minister also attended the launch of the global pact for the environment.

He met the secretary general of the International Communication Union Houlin Zhao, and afterwards he received the Raoul Wallenberg medal for supporting the struggle against any form of racism and discrimination.

The next day he welcomed Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, one of world’s largest e-commerce companies, in the Luxembourg House in New York City.

Luxembourg’s prime minister will travel onwards to California, where he will meet with more business representatives. He is scheduled to visit NASA, SpaceX and Paypal.
