Bird started the service last week, a move heavily criticised by the city.

The city was displeased with Bird’s “free floating” system, where users are responsible on their own for finding a place to park the scooters at the end of their rental. The city warned that the fleet could be “administratively seized” if scooters regularly blocked pedestrians, wheelchair users, cyclists or motorists.

Company representatives met with Lydie Polfer, Luxembourg City mayor (DP), and city officials this week.

In a press statement on 17 October, Bird said:

“The meeting was constructive and gave us the opportunity to explain how Bird can help solve Luxembourg’s congestion and air quality issues, as we’re doing in cities around the world. The mayor told us her concerns which we are now working to address. We are temporarily pausing our service while we make these changes. While we know this is disappointing for the thousands of people who have already used Bird, we believe it is best to work closely with the cities we operate in, so we will make these changes before resuming the service.”

The City of Luxembourg said in a press statement that Bird had agreed to the city’s request to remove its entire free floating fleet from Luxembourg City. The scooters were set to be fully collected by Saturday night.
