The appeal following June’s blood shortage resulted in 600 new blood donors coming forward
Luxembourg counted 13,415 blood donors at the end of 2016 while hundreds more joined this year following an appeal, the health minister has confirmed.
Responding to a parliamentary question, Lydia Mutsch said that the urgent campaign following June’s blood shortage resulted in 600 new blood donors coming forward.
These donors are now being evaluated by the blood donation service (CTS).
During 2016, the number of donors remained stable with 1,003 new donors coming forward. The same year the needs of hospitals varied hugely with demand for plasma rising 78% while demand for platelets fell by 20%, according to the minister.
