It’s the first time a Luxembourg director’s work will show at the festival, according to a Tuesday communiqué by Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg.

The production, which made its Luxembourg debut in February 2019 and has already toured France and Belgium, is an original take on Lars von Trier’s film of the same name. The filmmaker himself co-wrote the script, along with David Pirie and Peter Asmussen.

“Breaking the Waves” follows the story of Bess, a fragile and isolated woman, who falls in love with Jan, who ends up being paralysed in a work accident. Nevertheless, he encourages Bess to find a lover and reveal to him her sexual experiences.

Muller has called the work a “daring, perverse, extraordinary and controversial story”.
