Exports also fell, from 73,560 to 71,690 hl as did sales, from 381,971 to 376,000. The biggest market share is held by Brasserie Nationale (Bofferding, Battin, etc) at 40%, followed by Diekirch (29%), Battin (20%), Simon (8%) and micro-breweries (4%).
And in Europe...
Overall 2017 was the best year for production among European brewers of the previous eight years, with 397m hl produced (up from 395m in 2016), thanks in large part to growing exports.
A 2018 Brewers of Europe report found that 77m hl was exported from European brewers, of which 60% remained within Europe while the remainder is exported beyond the continent. The number of breweries, meanwhile, totaled 9,449. The sector was responsible for 2.3 m jobs.
Global consumption fell in 2017, but in 2018 brewers were expanding in growing markets in the African continent and southeast Asia.
