First up was Carlo Duprel, head of industry partnerships and the technology transfer office at the SnT. Co-founder of Mind & Market, Duprel was also previously a director at Deloitte Luxembourg and, prior to that, spent 12 years fostering research and innovation at the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).

SnT works with over 55 industry partners--most recently with Technoport--in six strategic areas, with some projects resulting in tech transfer or spinoffs.

Two such projects have been underway at the Luxembourg Bankers’ Association (ABBL), as its digital strategy, fintech and innovation advisor Andrey Martovoy explained. Martovoy represents the association on its own committees and also on the European level, for blockchain, AI and cloud.

The first project, which ran from 2017-2021, was tested with three pilot banks--BCEE, BNY Mellon and BGL BNP Paribas--and uses distributed ledger technology and data analytics for know your customer compliance. The feedback has been positive so far, due to automation of processes, thereby reducing costs, with the possibility that banks can generate revenue in the system developed.

The second project kicked off in January 2021, exploring AI for instant anti-money laundering due diligence, which aims to reduce administrative processes that add costs and complexity. Martovoy also gave his own tips for companies considering partnering with the SnT.

Finally, German Castignani, CEO of Motion-S--the University of Luxembourg’s first ever spinoff, in 2014--spoke in more detail about how the company’s technology empowers clients to design and implement new data-driven products and services in smart mobility, automotive and insurance.

Castignani, who serves as an adjunct professor at Sacred Heart University and a research fellow at Uni.lu, talked about how the company has evolved since its first GoodDrive connected car insurance app which it developed for Bâloise, the support he received for bridging the gap between academia and industry, and where he sees the future of mobility headed.

The discussion was moderated by Delano’s Natalie Gerhardstein. A Q&A session followed, led by the Colin Haggart, head of BCC’s business and innovation group.
