Luxembourg allows parents living across the border to apply for their children to be able to visit a school in the grand duchy, for example when a relative living in the country helps look after the children or if the school is located near the parents’ place of work.

During the 2020/2021 school year currently ongoing, 346 primary school pupils are commuting to a public school in Luxembourg, up from 330 the year before and 277 in 2018/2019.

The number of secondary school students has meanwhile fluctuated from 1,134 in 2018/2019 to 1,148 last year and 1,122 this year.

In addition to these learners attending a state-run school, 397 pupils were enrolled at the European schools in Kirchberg and Mamer, and another 93 at other private schools in the country.

The education ministry released the numbers in answer to a parliamentary question. The reasons why parents choose to enroll their children at a school in Luxembourg are not collected systematically, the ministry said.
