If such an outcome was very likely for some time, the deadline for applications was Monday, 12 April. And the mail could arrive until Tuesday if it was sent from a foreign country, the date of the postmark being taken as proof.

Claude Wiseler had filed his candidacy last Thursday morning, after having constituted a “coherent” team, validated by the different authorities of the party. The candidates for the various positions--secretary general, vice-presidents, deputies, regional presidents--are also the only ones to present themselves, the application having been made, for the first time, not individually but as a team.

Claude Wiseler’s stated objective is to unite the party, after months of internal squabbles under Frank Engel, and to avoid any fratricidal struggle in the appointment of the new CSV president.

The next step is the validation, on 24 April, by the party’s congress, which will be entirely digital. A 50% vote is necessary, but the outcome of the vote is not in doubt.
