According to its figures, some 37% of all card payments are carried out without entering the pin code. The service was introduced in Luxembourg in 2016 and is available on purchases of €25 or under.

While the adoption rate is promising, the grand duchy lags behind as across Europe some 47% of all card payments were contactless. The strongest adopters were the Czech Republic where, according to Mastercard, 93% of card transactions were contactless. They had a head start as the technology was introduced 20 years ago.

Mastercard estimated that in Luxembourg 100% of credit cards issued were equipped with contactless technology, compared with just 93% of payment terminals.

Contactless payments are most commonly used for supermarket purchases (25%), dining out (24%) and local shops and services, such as pharmacies and hairdressers (14%).
