The study sheds light on care provided in Luxembourg before and after the birth of a child from 2006-2015.

According to the CNS, 6,315 children were born in 2015 in Luxembourg, compared with 5,407 in 2006, representing an increase of 17%. It also notes that, while the vast majority of women giving birth in Luxembourg are residents, the share of non-resident women has increased in 10 years, from 6.9% in 2006 to 12% in 2015.

Increasing costs

Costs have also increased over the period, with maternity services in Luxembourg (hospital care, medical procedures, analyses, etc.) covered by the CNS amounting to €49.6 million in 2015, compared with €34.7 million in 2006 (+42.9%). This represents 3% of all sickness and maternity benefits in kind.

62% of these benefits relate to hospital care and between 85% and 89% of these services are directly related to labour and birth.

Falling costs

An analysis of expenditure by resident patients found that 95% of women had expenses of less than €12,419, with half presenting invoices of between €6,000 and €8,000. In total, the average amount per resident patient was €7,870 in 2015 compared with €8,121 in 2006 (-3.1%).
