The independent jury selected John Moore’s now iconic “Crying Girl on the Border” as the World Press Photo of the Year. The photo shows Honduran toddler Yanela Sanchez crying as she and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, are taken into custody by US border officials in McAllen, Texas, USA, on 12 June 2018.

The same story was the subject of the winner in a new category created by the foundation. “The Migrant Caravan” by Pieter Ten Hoopen, was awarded the first World Press Photo Story of the Year.

Moore’s photo was chosen ahead of some stiff competition, including Chris McGrath’s “The disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi” and Brent Stirton’s “Akashinga - ‘The Brave Ones’” of a member of an all-female anti-poaching unit in Zimbabwe.

The Interactive prize in the Digital Storytelling Contest went to Frontline and The GroundTruth Project for its “The Last Generation” project. It tells “a cinematic, seamlessly interactive story that brings audiences into the lives of three children who face losing not just their homes but their entire nation to rising seas.”
