Luxembourg City on 5 June is hosting an outdoor market and the city council had refused the request for the cycling protest saying there wouldn’t be enough room in the capital’s streets to accommodate shoppers and cyclists alike.

During a meeting on 31 May, the city revised its position provided the cyclists change their route through the capital.

The protest will now start at 3pm at Place du Saint-Esprit and will from there travel in direction of the Gare district, up Avenue de la Liberté, circumventing the city centre in direction of Limpertsberg, ending near the Grand Théâtre. The route is around 6km long.

Organised by ProVelo, the demonstration on wheels is hosted in the framework of World Bicycle Day on 3 June, which aims to promote bicycles as a simple, affordable, reliable and sustainable mode of transport.

ProVelo is demanding safer infrastructure for cyclists in the capital. Three cyclists died in road accidents last year, national statistics show, with another 35 cyclists seriously injured. This was up from 22 seriously injured cyclists in 2019, when no deaths were reported.
