The government had premiered the cycling summer initiative last year as the pandemic hampered international travel and as part of an effort to make local tourism more attractive.

More than 40,000 cyclists took up the challenge and participated despite initial setbacks as the government had to cut back on the programme envisioned when some communes refused to sign up over fears of traffic disruptions.

In 2021, 65 communes will be taking part in the Vëlosummer from 31 July until 29 August, offering 12 routes measuring more than 550km in total. Some of the routes will be available only on weekends when roads will be closed for other traffic. Full details will be published online.

Cyclists wanting to travel with luggage can have their cases delivered to their destination and the €50 hotel vouchers issued by the government remain valid until 15 September to book accommodation.

“Since 2020, we have been experiencing a real renaissance in cycling in Luxembourg. The bicycle as an efficient, climate-friendly, safe and healthy mode of transport is increasingly becoming a serious alternative for citizens,” said transport minister François Bausch (déi Gréng) during a press conference on 7 May.

“In this way, we encourage residents, cross-border workers and foreign tourists to discover our varied and unspoiled nature, our cultural attractions, our local shops and our friendly horeca establishments,” said tourism minister Lex Delles (DP).
