Sitting in the Gulf of Gabès off the coast of Tunisia, the island of Djerba is a Mediterranean haven blessed with beautiful beaches and thalassotherapy spas. What’s more, the island also has a rich history and culture which you can easily explore as part of a LuxairTours-organised tour.
The tour kicks off on the south-east coast near El Kantara, at the archaeological site of Meninx. Founded by the Phoenicians in 10th century B.C., Meninx was once the island’s most important town. However, what remains today are remnants from the Roman times, like thermal baths, an amphitheatre and a basilica, plus the six-mile long Roman causeway which links the island to the Tunisian mainland.
Next stop is Guallela, a Berber town famous for its traditional pottery. A quick visit to the Guallela Museum and you’ll discover the richly weird and wonderful history, locals crafts and ceremonies special to Djerba. All this, before heading to El Ghriba, Tunisia’s oldest synagogue with a white-wash exterior and azure blue columns inside. The island is home to Tunisia’s largest Jewish population, and every year thousands of pilgrims make the journey here for annual festivities.
If the synagogue’s myriad of colours wasn’t a big enough feast for your eyes, then Djerbahood is sure to do the trick! In the heart of Erriadh, this open-aired museum boasts street art from over a hundred different artists from around the world. The tour also includes a traditional lunch in Houmt Souk, where you can also indulge on all the wonderful wares the capital’s souks have to offer, from leather goods, ceramics and fine silver jewellery.
LuxairTours offers packages to Djerba with up to 4 flights per week.
