Engel, CSV party president, was paid €40,000 as an employee of CSV-Frëndeskrees, a not-for-profit organisation that manages the party’s real estate assets. Some members of the outfit claimed it was a sham position.

But Engel told RTL on Wednesday that he had been hired for fundraising and to help transform CSV-Frëndeskrees into a foundation, work he said that he has done under the terms of his employment contract. His mistake was not telling more people about his role, he stated.

An unnamed source told Paperjam that CSV-Frëndeskrees members felt obliged to file the complaint following legal advice, after the outfit’s accounts were rejected at its annual general assembly.

Engel said on RTL that he had nothing to be reproached about and had faith in the judicial system to clear him.

In addition, Engel said that he was still considering standing for a second term as party president during the CSV congress to be held in April.
