So, it should come as little surprise to know that 5.4 million tonnes of pasta was produced within the EU in 2017. According to figures published by Eurostat on 25 October, just over three quarters (76%) was produced in Italy.

Who are the biggest pasta consumers outside of Italy?

Germany wins that title, importing a quarter of the EU total at 363,000 tonnes. France was not far behind with 337,000 tonnes of pasta imported, equivalent to 23% of the EU total.

Luxembourg does not import all of the pasta it consumes--it also makes its own. Among the biggest local producers are the Nuddelfabrik, Maxim and organic pasta makers Dudel Magie.
