It is now just over 12 years since Luxembourg-based entrepreneur Luisella Moreschi and Rwandan priest Abbé Pierre met and decided to set up a charity to help survivors, most notably widows and their children, of the Rwandan genocide. On her first visit to the country, Moreschi had been impressed by its beauty, “the kindness of people and the dignity of the survivors.”

Now the charity she set up, Femmes Développement, has helped get some 2,000 children into school, distributed 2,475 microcredits, handed out 290 scholarships and helped build a health centre with 60 beds. In addition, a technical school with capacity for 250 students is also being built. “Our goal has always been to help educate youngsters and enable women, the widows of the genocide, to become literate,” Moreschi told Delano three years ago.

One of the charity’s principal fundraisers is an annual gala dinner and ball held in October at the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains. This year’s theme is Africa and African culture, and features a catwalk show with models wearing clothes by successful Cameroonian Arrey Kono designer. Her designs are described as trendy pleated clothes in modern abstract prints. Further entertainment will be provided by Li Marteling’s school of dance with an Afro Jazz Dance presentation. And the main act is Motown tribute act Trio Suprema from London, who will bring a slice of iconic African-American culture to the evening.

As usual, the organisers have also managed to gather a great selection of “dreamy prizes” for the tombola at the dinner.
