The centre follows facilities in Luxembourg City, Esch/Belval, Mondorf and Ettelbruck, and opens as the Luxexpo convention centre is also being transformed into a vaccination centre.

Prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP) and social security minister Romain Schneider (LSAP) will be visiting the Findel centre as it opens on 12 April. Schneider is replacing health minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP), who is still recovering from an illness.

She had collapsed in March while on a walk with her dogs at a pond in Nennig, Germany. Schneider has been given delegation of signature until 18 April by grand ducal decree.

Luxembourg so far has administered 126,902 vaccination doses, including 33,152 people who have received both shots. The opening of the Findel and Luxexpo vaccination centres would allow the country to administer up to 95,000 jabs a week if enough material is available.

Pfizer/Biontech is the most commonly administered vaccine, making up more than half of deliveries scheduled until the end of April (76,440 doses in total), followed by AstraZeneca (35,207), Moderna (12,000) and Johnson & Johnson (4,800).

The grand duchy continues administering the AstraZeneca vaccine, following guidance from the European Medicines Agency that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks. The EMA has acknowledged a rare type of cerebral thrombosis as a possible side effect of the jab and is further analysing the link.

The EMA had analysed 86 cases of blood clots, 18 of which were fatal, out of more than 25m people vaccinated.
