While e-books and competitive delivery times for online book orders are making it ever easier for consumers to get books--even rare ones--at their fingertips with just one click, for some there is still the thrill of browsing through local bookshops.

“It’s important to support local shops or they will disappear,” says Luxembourg resident and avid reader, Cordula Schnuer. “It might sound old-fashioned, but I would much rather spend my money at a shop I know and trust than some anonymous retailer.”

So whether it’s simply to browse and potentially discover new reads or simply to support local sellers, here’s a quick list of bookstores that sell English books.

All-English Bookstore

Run by Ernster, this shop, as the name implies, is Luxembourg’s only all-English bookseller. In June, it celebrated its two-year anniversary with Luxembourg-based author, Ali Seegar. Just steps away from the Grand Ducal Palace, the shop has a range of book choices, from literature and travel to an extensive young adult section. Stay tuned for upcoming reading sessions and events, especially into the autumn and the pre-Christmas season.

Librairie Alinéa

Located on Rue Beaumont in the heart of Luxembourg City, Alinéa had announced earlier in 2017 plans to close its doors due to rising rent, until it was saved through a citizen initiative.

Although English books are slightly harder to find, as they are peppered throughout the non-fiction sections on the ground floor, the first floor affords a full wall devoted to English books, from classics to more modern reads. Don’t miss the table stacked with new editions and bestsellers.

Librairie Française

Although predominantly a French bookshop as the name states, the large store located just off Hamilius has some English literature as well, mainly classics and new releases. It also has a wide range of cards and stationery.

Libraire des Lycées

Located in Limpertsberg, the bulk of the English books here are used for teaching, meaning there is a wide range of classics. There’s also a sales bin with books at a deep discount.

Librairie Libo

Not far from the central train station, attached to the Exki restaurant, is Libo. In addition to a paper supply area on the ground floor, the first floor has a range of fiction and non-fiction reads.
