She shares some of her experiences and tips to help you make the adjustment to living in Luxembourg as painless as possible.

“The first thing is to read as much as possible about our country and culture. It doesn’t matter where you come from, it is about where you are going. It is important to gain knowledge about the housing market, which is very expensive and highly demanding. A good way to start is to connect with other expats on social media where you can find a lot of useful information,” she advised.

Get your paperwork ready in advance is her next tip. “Collect information about all documents required before moving to avoid problems once you have arrived. Any kind of paperwork and documents regarding visa, work permits, certificates, translations, driving licence, etc. should be prepared before arrival.”

To assist you in getting organised, Schmit recommends the following websites: www.athome.lu for housing, and www.guichet.lu for administrative questions. “Also check with relocation services, city halls, the mobiliteit.lu app for public transport, and get a City magazine subscription.”

As for what not to do: “Do not come to Luxembourg one day before you start your new job, and do not sign a lease for an apartment or house that you have not seen. Also, do not make any payments before signing a lease. We also advise against negotiating with agencies or landlords too much as this could result in losing the flat/house.”
