At age 98, he is the world’s oldest living monarch and served as Grand Duke from 12 November 1964 to 7 October 2000. He was succeeded by his son, Henri. 

In recent weeks, the Grand Duke participated in a number of events, including the “Insignes du Mérite Jeunesse” awards ceremony on 28 March and the Stand Speak Rise Up conference, an initiative by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa which took place on 26-27 March.
