In a speech televised on Tuesday, after single day infections reached an all-time high of 862 on Friday, Grand Duke Henri said he was particularly concerned about infections impacting hospital staff.

“Added to this is the news that there is at the same time a resurgence of infections in old people's and nursing homes.

“Because of this new increase in infections, the situation in the health sector is tense. All the medical staff is doing an extraordinary job. They are doing their utmost to ensure optimal care,” the Grand Duke said, adding that it was “important that everyone who lives or works in Luxembourg helps to stop the spread of the virus again.”

The Grand Duke appealed to people to show solidarity and respect and abide by the measures in place. Parliament on Wednesday is expected to vote into law an 11pm to 6am curfew and a rule of four, down from the previous ten people who could meet without wearing masks.

“We owe this not only to our fellow human beings, but also to nurses, doctors, nurses' assistants and all hospital staff.”

While exceptional limitations on daily lives and freedoms were not to be taken lightly, “they are currently necessary and appropriate in the fight against the pandemic.”

He closed by urging people to act now. “Only together will we succeed in overcoming this ordeal.”
