According to a study released by the health ministry in March 2017, 1,187 people died of various forms of heart disease in 2015.

That represented 30.2% of all deaths in Luxembourg that year. Approximately 80 more women than men were afflicted.

The second leading cause of death was cancer (28.2%), killing more than 1,100 people. Lung tumours were the leading cancer type, with 228 deaths recorded.

Even if heart disease remained the leading death cause in Luxembourg, the health ministry report showed that the numbers have decreased over the last ten years. However, the numbers of death by cancer have increased from 25.8% to 28.2%.

The leading death cause for people up to the age of 55 was suicide, with 61 male cases and 20 women. 36 people died in a traffic accident.

As for location, 54.9% of deaths occurred in hospitals. Only 6 people died at their workplace and 227 citizens died abroad.

Some uplifting figures in the charts were the complete absence of women dying during childbirth, and, as of 1 July 2015, 67 people in Luxembourg were older than 100.
