Statec’s report “Tourism today and yesterday: 20 years of the tourism survey” (pdf) found the average duration of a summer holidays taken in July or August fell over the past two decades from 14-15 days to 10-11.

It was not the only downward trend: holidays scheduled around Christmas time also shrank, down from an average of nine to six days. The duration of holidays during the rest of the year also receded.

In contrast, the proportion of residents travelling abroad rose from two thirds to eight in ten while the number of breaks people take rose from on average two to three holidays per person, per year.

Holiday spending also rose from €660 to €770 from 2011 to 2016, equivalent to a daily expenditure of €106 up from €95.

France remains the most population destination, being sought out by six out of ten travellers from Luxembourg, while Germany overtook Spain to occupy second place on the podium.
