That’s according to figures published by Statec, the national statistics bureau, on 13 May.

About 70% of housing units completed in 2016 were apartments, Statec stated.

Growth has been centred around the capital and Esch-Alzette. Between 2007 and 2016, 25% of the country’s new housing units were built in the canton of Esch-Alzette, 15% in the City of Luxembourg and 15% in the canton of Luxembourg-Campagne (the area surrounding the capital).

Statec said the size of single family homes expanded from 181 square meters in 2007 to 196 square meters in 2016. The average size of flats, however, shrunk from 85 square meters in 2007 to 80 square metres.
