British nationals ceased to be considered EU citizens on 1 February 2020 and are required to obtain a new residence document to replace their current permit. The deadline for application is 30 June.

“The government closely follows the evolution of requests filed by British nationals and their families,” foreign minister Jean Asselborn said in response to a parliamentary question published on 8 June.

As of 4 June, a total of 3,838 applications had been received by authorities, of which 565 are still being processed. All applications have been accepted so far. But around 630 people have yet to file their request, Asselborn said.

Only people who can provide good reason for missing the deadline will be able to have their application accepted after the 30 June deadline, Asselborn said.

“The persons concerned risk the loss of the right of residence and, consequently, of the right to work and of the right of access certain social benefits,” Asselborn said, adding that the ministry would continue monitoring the number of applications received over the course of this month.
