Jean-Claude Juncker had just taken the podium to speak at the European Committee of the Regions plenary session in Brussels on 8 October.

When the introductory music dragged on a bit too long, Juncker starting swinging his shoulders back and forth.

This prompted James Crisp, Brussels correspondent for the Telegraph, to tweet:

“Is this @JunckerEU mocking @theresa_may’s Abba dance at a speech to the Committee of the Regions? I am saying yes.”

Crisp was referring to the dancing entrance that Theresa May made before her speech to the Tory confab in Birmingham on 3 October. May took the stage to Abba’s ‘Dancing queen’:

A spokesman for Juncker told Reuters that the moves were “not directed at anyone” and that Juncker has “great respect” for the British PM.

While many political leaders have noted the tensions between British and European sides, Juncker said last month that the EU and UK were “like two hedgehogs who love each other.… When two hedgehogs embrace, they have to watch out that they don’t get scratched.”
