Constructed at the former Opel garage in a complex which already boasts chains Cora, Aldi and Auchan Drive, the store was inaugurated with Luxembourg cycling champion Bob Jungels, who is the face of the chain’s national brand. At 1,704 square metres, it is the chain’s biggest store in the country yet and has reportedly led to the creation of 40 jobs.
It boasts a car park with capacity for 149 vehicles and includes an electric vehicle charging station and 880 photovoltaic panels on the roof, generating enough energy to power 45 homes. There are also several other environmentally sound features, such as water collection, insulation and energy consumption monitoring.
Lidl further announced that it is rebuilding an existing store in Differdange, taking it from 650 to 1,486 square metres, which will be operational in 2020.
Meanwhile, it will open its eleventh store in Huldange, opposite the Knauf Shopping Center, in January 2020. Both are equipped with photovoltaic panels and include other environmentally sustainable features. The chain invested a total €32m in all three projects.
Lidl has undergone an extensive rebranding in the past five years, shifting the focus to quality produce while keeping prices low.
On Wednesday, Luxembourg Lidl spokesman Julien Wathieu said that in future the chain plans to increase the choice of local produce it sells. “We currently have around 50 Luxembourg brands and our goal is to ensure 10% of all products sold annually are Luxembourg brands,” he said.
