Women were slightly more affected than men, according to Eurostat, with their life expectancy dropping from 85.2 to 84.2 years of age. For men, the drop was from 80.2 to 79.4. Overall, this resulted in life expectancy decreasing from 82.7 to 81.8.

The largest decreases in life expectancy at birth between 2019 and 2020 were recorded in Spain (-1.6 years) and Bulgaria (-1.5), followed by Lithuania, Poland and Romania (all -1.4).

Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years that a newborn child would live if subjected to current mortality conditions throughout the rest of their life.

Germany (-0.2) saw the lowest decrease in life expectancy while it was stable in Cyprus and Latvia (+/- 0) and even increased in Denmark and Finland (+0.1).
