The KPL failed to fulfil the criteria to take part in the debates, on RTL and public radio station 100,7, that require political parties to have full candidate lists in communes totalling at least 147,000 inhabitants – equivalent to one quarter of the total population of the Grand Duchy. The KPL struggled to put together a full list of 27 candidates in the capital city, mustering only 19 for its list.

Long standing KPL president Ali Ruckert says that taken proportionally, that indicates that the party is well represented and that it should be allowed to take part in the debates. He claims that the government parties have long complained that there were too many participants at the public debates and that the new rules were drawn up precisely to prevent smaller parties from having a voice. The Piraten Partéi has also failed to fulfil the criteria, managing to get together complete lists in communes totally some 135,000 candidates, according to RTL.
