The TNS Ilres question of the month for January 2017 asked residents when they checked social media for the first time each day.

Out of the 500 people aged 16 and above who responded, 16% said they logged on while in bed; one in ten said they checked after getting out of bed but before getting dressed.

One in five respondents said they preferred to check their social media accounts while eating breakfast.

Not everyone was so eager to view social media, however. Of those who responded, 5% said they waited until lunchtime and a further 3% said they would check for the first time in the evening.

A further 13% said they did not have a social media account.

Luxembourg residents have among the highest engagement levels with social media within the EU.

Eurostat figures for 2015 suggest that seven out of ten residents surveyed said they used the internet for social networking compared with the EU average of five out of ten.

Meanwhile, a 2014 survey found that Facebook was the most commonly used social media platform in Luxembourg where 57% of people surveyed were using it.
