On 24 April, the main opposition party will hold a congress to choose a president for the next two years. For the time being, only Frank Engel, the current president, has announced that he will be a candidate. Others are possibly waiting to launch their candidacy at the right moment and not too early.

Serge Wilmes, who ran two years ago, no longer seems interested. Marc Spautz and Claude Wiseler are among the possible contenders, but they have yet to reveal their intentions.

Luc Frieden was also a potential candidate. The former minister, currently president of the Chamber of Commerce and of the board of directors of BIL, put an end to speculation on Saturday during the RTL programme "Background am Gespréich" by indicating that he preferred to concentrate on his mission at the Chamber of Commerce. Frieden was once considered Jean-Claude Juncker's natural successor, but the 2013 ousting of Juncker's government put an end to this speculation.

During the interview Frieden also said that he would not find it normal if there was only one candidate in the race. He does not believe in a return of Jean-Claude Juncker either, which he had already indicated to Paperjam.
