According to figures published by Eurostat to mark World No Tobacco Day on 31 March, cancer killed 1.4 million people in the EU in 2014.

Of that figure, a fifth (21%) of deaths (272,00) was caused by lung cancer, including cancer of the trachea and bronchus.

In Luxembourg, the proportion of lung cancer deaths was even higher, at 23%.

Luxembourg recorded the seventh highest share of lung cancer in all cases of fatal cancer in the EU, behind Hungary (27%), Belgium, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands and Poland (all at 24%).

The lowest shares were recorded in Portugal (14%), Latvia, Slovakia and Sweden (16%).

A 2016 survey commissioned by the Fondation Cancer found that one in five people in Luxembourg smoke, a proportion which changed little since the year before.

However, it observed a slight rise in young smokers, from 23% to 26%.

Around 1,000 people die in Luxembourg as a result of smoking-related illnesses, of which 90 deaths are related to passive smoking.
