Last year, RTL broadcast an interview with Lunghi, at the time still heading the art museum, in which he appeared to manhandle a journalist. Bettel, who is also the prime minister, commented the day after video footage of the incident was made public and started a disciplinary hearing.

It was later found that RTL had considerably edited certain scenes to exagerate the aggressive behaviour of Lunghi. Lunghi resigned Mudam chair in December 2016. Laurent Loschetter has replaced him.

Lunghi reacted to an interview with Bettel, in which Bettel defended his actions. Bettel had said that:

“the pictures showed that Mr Lunghi’s attitude towards Ms Schram was not appropriate. He should not threaten Ms Schram and push the microphone away in such a way. That is why I started disciplinary proceedings.”

Bettel added that:

“I was absolutely neutral in this affair. I was neither pro-Lunghi nor anti-Lunghi and could not understand this debate. It became clear that Lunghi’s attitude was inappropriate. And later, through the committee I instated, it came out that equally, the attitudes of RTL and Ms Schram were not okay.”

Lunghi, who resigned from his post a Mudam chair, wrote in a letter published by the Luxemburger Wort on Saturday 9 September that:

“Bettel can still not admit that he did not respect the presumption of innocence.”

He said that Bettel “left him high and dry” after the broadcasting of the TV show “De Nol op de Kapp” on 3 October 2016, which had cut out certain scenes and gave a misleading image of the interview.

When the whole interview was published, and after the disciplinary hearing, everyone knew what really happened, said Lunghi, and that the allegations of the culture minister had been without any foundation.
