Although mayor Lydie Polfer (DP) had previously announced that the Christmas market and the “Winterlights” festival would be taking place, although adapted to the current health crisis, the situation has changed quite dramatically since then she said on Tuesday. 

In light of the latest spikes in covid-19 infections, the city decided it had no other choice than to cancel the event, which was supposed to take place in different locations across the city center from 20 November to 3 January.

Although Polfer confirmed that there would be no markets, ice rinks or any other form of entertainment, the city’s streets will nevertheless be decorated with lights and trees in order to bring at least some of the festive spirit to the capital. 

The cancellation of the market does not really come as a surprise, as prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP) and health minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP), on Friday, announced that new restrictions, including a rule of 4 and a curfew will be put in place later this week due to further infections and hospitalisations.
